"Don't worry, I don't love her. It didn't mean anything."
If these words were said by a cheating husband to his hurting wife in reference to the other woman in an extra-marital affair, would it make the wife feel better? What if she has heard these words several times in the course of their relationship, will it matter at all if he did love another woman or several women all at the same time? If he did not love any of them, is it possible that acts of infidelity were engaged in for love of himself and no other?
Men who habitually cheat and yet do not show any particular commitment to any of his mistresses are said to be narcissistic in nature. Narcissists are people actively engaged in activities for self-gratification such as infidelity. Because of their constant need for admiration and attention, they can have several affairs going on at the same time while still feeling the need to hold on to their respective spouses to remain "socially acceptable". Being accepted is one of the primary concerns of a narcissist and this could lead him to try all things possible to ensure getting the best of both worlds.
Narcissists are natural charmers and are known to promise anything to get their way. Whether it be on manipulating a new conquest or controlling a wife who is threatening to leave, a cheating narcissist can use his skills to his advantage. Men who particularly pursue married women are said to be narcissists who derive great satisfaction in conquering committed women.
There is no end in sight for a narcissist when it comes to cheating. Cheating feeds his ego, his conceit, his vanity, and his selfishness. Seldom is he encouraged to act for the benefit of another and usually does so just to accomplish his goal.
Many wives of narcissistic men have sought to console themselves of the thought that another woman can never replace them. Come to think of it, what is there to replace when the wife has never occupied the top place in her husband's heart who only has love for himself?
