Seeing the wife and the mistress side by side and declaring a no-contest in favor of the wife produce an inexplicable amazement as to why the husband's infidelity took place at all. A lovely wife pitted against an "ugly" mistress surely does not require much thinking. Obviously, this is not so for the erring husband who finds himself drawn to the other woman in spite of the evident advantage of the wife in every aspect.
Many have sought to explain this phenomena in two words: insecurity and control. Husbands who are extremely insecure of their wives's physical endowment tend to look for lesser-endowed mistresses on whom they can exercise more control. It is a sad truth that people who are not considered physically beautiful have lesser opportunities in finding attractive partners. The few success stories we hear of are exceptions rather than the rule.
There is reason to believe that this so-called lesser opportunity makes less-attractive women easy targets for the sexual advances of men looking for mistresses. This does not in any way intend to generalize the relationship conduct of women, beautiful or not. Rather, we present a probable explanation for the vulnerability that causes women to accept a certain situation which they wouldn't normally consent to like being a mistress.
Another proposed explanation why men choose "ugly" mistresses is that they saw a certain quality or qualities in these women which they deemed more important than the beauty of their wives. This is very possible since married couples only get to know each other in the course of the marriage. The physical attraction that initially drew them together may be not be enough to sustain their relationship and can be disregarded when other needs takes priority over having a beautiful and decorative wife.
